How to Throw a DIY St. Patrick’s Day Party

Are you ready to get festive for St. Patrick's Day? March doesn't have the most exciting holidays to celebrate, so you know you have to do something over the top to make sure your St. Patty's Day party brings your guests some merriment during these trying, cold winter months.

Let's get planning:

1. Start with the St. Patty's Day outfit
Everyone wears the same outfit with the same slogan plastered across their chest every year, "Kiss me I'm Irish." This year instead of demanding smooches from strangers, make your own unique outfit. Sometimes less is more – pick a statement green color and play off of that instead of buying a cheesy T-shirt. Maybe one of your favorite summer dresses is green? Break that out of hibernation, throw it on, and welcome back spring. Of course, the alternative is to go all in – all green everything. Your commitment level is up to you!

2. Move onto beverages, featuring the shamrock shake
This green concoction is so easy to make, according to an Allrecipes creation. Here's what you'll need:

  • 2 cups of vanilla ice cream
  • 1 1/4 cups of fat free milk
  • 2 tblspns of chocolate syrup
  • 1/4 tblspns of mint extract
  • 9 drops of green food coloring.

Depending on the size of your party or blender you'll need to adjust the portions of ingredients – but once you have them all set up all you have to do is toss them in the blender and whip them up until things are looking good and green.

Bonus drink option: If you're looking for a healthy alternative to this frozen treat, instead whip up a kale smoothie – those bad boys are super green in hue.

3. Plan some fun games for your guests
Set up a scavenger hunt in search of a pot of gold, or have your friends look for the four leaf clover in a clover field. Or try your luck in a horse shoe toss competition. There are a variety of fun luck-themed games you can play, you just have to get creative.

4. Make some treats
With green dye, you can make pretty much any food look green. But you can definitely brainstorm some of your favorite treats that are already green – guacamole anyone? It's time to break out some of your favorite finger foods. Whip up some of the following appetizers on your party day: spinach and artichoke dip, green cupcakes, pesto pizza or pistachio cookies. And for a fun surprise inspired by Diamond Candles, bake a cake and hide a claddagh ring inside it – whoever finds the lucky slice gets to keep the ring!

5. Set the ambiance
Make a playlist that combines some of your favorite party tunes with some Irish ditties. Most people get pretty excited when they hear The Dropkick Murphys "I'm Shipping Up to Boston," so be sure that makes it on your playlist. Or, choose to have a series of movies playing in the background. P.S. I Love You has beautiful scenes of Ireland that will be a perfect compliment to your decorations.
