Whether your team makes it or not, there's no denying the appeal of watching the Super Bowl. Not only do you get to watch the two best teams of the year compete, but you get to check out some hilarious commercials and witness the crazy theatrics of the halftime show. But no Super Bowl viewing party is complete without a group of friends and family, tasty beverages and delicious snacks. Once you've taken care of the first two, choose some of these football-themed appetizers and desserts to serve up in style.
Mini football calzones
Everyone loves calzones, and there's no denying the appeal of a football-shaped mini calzone. All you'll need are:
- 1 package of dough
- Pizza sauce
- Mozzarella cheese
- 1 egg.
Use a large round cookie cutter to cut the dough into an even number of circles, then cut each circle into a football shape. Once you cut one, you can use it as a stencil to make the rest the same size. Now put a large pinch of toppings in the center of half of the dough shapes, then top with some mozzarella cheese and pizza sauce. Leave some room on the sides of the dough.
Beat the egg with a tablespoon of cold water, then brush it onto the space around the toppings. Add a plain piece of dough on top and use a fork to press down and seal the edges. Make slits in the top to look like the laces of a football. Now brush the tops of each football calzone with the egg mixture and place on a baking sheet. Bake at 425 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the dough is golden brown. Serve with some pizza sauce for dipping.
Mini football meatloaves
If your guests are in the mood for some comfort food, meatloaf is a no-brainer. All you need to do is put together your favorite meatloaf recipe, but instead of baking it in a loaf pan, use a mini football-shaped cake mold. If you can't find a mold, it's easy enough to shape the mixture with your hands. After they're done baking and have had some time to cool, use shredded mozzarella cheese to make laces on top of each meatloaf. Cute and yummy!
Cocoa Krispies football treat
Rice Krispies treats are a classic dessert that no one can say no to. For the big game, whip up a chocolaty batch with Cocoa Krispies to resemble a big football. Make your Rice Krispies treat mix as usual
with the Cocoa Krispies, then form the batch into a football shape. If you can, use a football mold to make it easier! Once it's nice and round, use white frosting or fondant to make the laces on top and the stripes on the sides.
Chocolate-dipped strawberry footballs
Another dessert classic, chocolate-dipped strawberries get a sporty makeover with this recipe. You'll need:
- 1 1/2 cups dark chocolate chips
- 1/4 cup white chocolate chips
- 14 large strawberries.
Start by melting the dark chocolate in the microwave for 30-second intervals, stirring in between, until melted. Dip each washed strawberry into the chocolate, then place them on a baking sheet covered in wax paper. Let the chocolate dry for about 15 minutes, then melt the white chocolate and transfer it to a piping bag or a plastic sandwich bag with a small hole cut in the tip. Use it to draw football laces on the strawberries. When you're done, pop them in the fridge to chill before serving.
