5 Indulgent Body Scrub Recipes

Exfoliation is a key aspect of skin care, and while you might be adamant about exfoliating your face, you may not be as vigilant when it comes to your body. Winter is especially hard on your skin, though, which means you might be dealing with dry, itchy, flaking skin on your arms and legs. If that's the case, why not make your own body scrub? Use one of these five recipes to create luxurious, natural skin scrubs that will leave you feeling smooth and moisturized.

1. Coffee scrub
The caffeine in coffee can stimulate blood flow and circulation when it's applied to your skin, which makes coffee scrub a great way to help reduce the appearance of stretch marks and cellulite. Skinny Ms. recommended making a simple scrub with ground coffee and olive oil. You can either use fresh ground coffee or coffee grounds that you've already used, but if you go with fresh coffee, you'll want to wet it with a little bit of warm water first. Then just mix the grounds with the olive oil until it forms a paste. Rub it into your skin for a few minutes and leave it on for up to 20 minutes before rinsing it off.

2. Cinnamon sugar scrub
According to IndianBeautySpot.com, cinnamon has natural disinfectant, antiseptic and antimicrobial properties, making it a great way to cleanse the skin. The grainy texture of the cinnamon and sugar in this scrub will help remove dead skin and improve circulation. Just mix a couple of tablespoons of sugar – either white or brown – with a tablespoon of olive oil and a teaspoon of cinnamon. Store it in an air-tight container so it stays fresh for reuse.

3. Lavender vanilla salt scrub
This scrub from the Building Our Story blog smells amazing and makes a wonderful present if you want to give someone the gift of smooth skin. Just mix together 2 cups of Epsom salts and 1 cup of coarse sea salt. Add 1/2 cup of the oil of your choice, whether it's coconut, jojoba, sweet almond, avocado or olive, and mix well. Add 2 tablespoons of vanilla extract and 15 drops of lavender essential oil and stir. If you'd like, you can make the scrub purple using a mix of red and blue food coloring.

4. Lemon sugar scrub
Lemon is known as a natural skin brightener that's also great for exfoliating. To make a simple lemony scrub, all you need is sugar, oil and lemon essential oil. Use about 1 cup of sugar and 1/4 cup of the oil of your choice, then add in about 15 drops of the lemon oil. If you're giving it as a gift, a little yellow food coloring will make it look extra fancy.

5. Oatmeal honey scrub
If uncomfortable dry skin is a real issue for you, the soothing, moisturizing properties of oatmeal and honey can help. According to the Dabbles & Babbles blog, all you need is 2 parts oatmeal that's been ground up in a blender, 1 part honey and 1 part oil. Jojoba, coconut or sweet almond oil are good choices. Mix it all together and rub it into your skin for a few minutes before washing off. It's great for use on your face, too!
